The Best and the Worst of the 2009 Academic Year at UW

As another academic year closes, it is time to recognize both the finest and lousiest aspects of the 2008-2009 academic year at the University of Washington.

The Best, most notable and infamous of the 2008-2009 Academic Year

Biggest Winner of the Year: Timothy Mensing for winning the ASUW Presidential Election
-Normally winning an election by itself isn’t that notable, but considering that Tim came as a complete outsider, who was running against Gerald Corporal, who had the backing of the entire previous Board of Directors, Timothy Mensing earned this.

RSO of the Year: Model United Nations at the University of Washington:
-They brought in the former US Ambassador to Georgia in November to speak (When the Russo-Georgia conflict was still the thing), won numerous awards all over the country at competitive conferences, won a team award at Nationals in New York, and created world peace. Can someone explain to me why none of the administrators at UW cares about this?

Best Finale as a Senator: Andrew Everett
-Everett has always been known for being the center of controversy, and his final months as ASUW Senator did not disappoint. His second to last resolution won by 1 vote and his last resolution tied and had to be re-voted on again the following week. If there is one thing people can agree on, senate will not be the same without Everett.

Best “Controversial” Event: Israelpalooza
-After years of Israelpalooza being held with little much of a response by the Palestinian groups, this year was a bit more heated to say the least. Nice to see actually political controversy at the normally very boring UW campus.

The worst, the dumbest and most disappointing of the academic year

How-not-to-handle-a-crisis Award: The Board of Regents
-I already covered this a post ago, but to sum it up: When there is a crisis on campus and people want answers it is a bad idea to refuse to tell anyone what is going on or answer questions on why you are doing what you are doing. I know the Regents are in a no-win situation, but how they handling the problem is going to cost UW greatly over the next few years.

Worst “Controversial” Event on Campus: Tent City III
-After all the debate, facebook wars and mobilization of people, the opposition towards Tent City III could only muster bringing one person to the Town Hall meeting they were planning to show public opposition too. I don’t know if my post convinced anyone to change their opinion or if the “opposition” just wasn’t that passionate in the first place. Either way, what a disappointing show.

Worst Person to be on Campus: UW Daily writer John Fay
-I am not going to bore you on all the little details about John Fay; you can find many wonderful opinions of him on google and in this wonderful post. But just imagine what it was like to be John Fay for this year? Every class you’ll walk into, everyone will prejudge you based on an article you wrote months ago. I feel sorry for the TAs and Professors who had to deal with this problem. Lesson for the day: always a use pen name.

Worst Writer for the UW Daily: Jackson Rohrbaugh
-I’ll give John fay credit; his articles actually are readable. It’s a 50-50 chance whether or not I will even understand what I just read with Jackson Rohrbaugh. You know you need help when your articles often get replies that simply state what?

Board of Regents “Town Hall” reaction..

Last Thursday the Board of Regents town hall meeting that I was fortunate enough to attend. The town hall came in reaction to the uproar over the budget cuts and pressure put on by groups like the ABC Coalition. Upon leaving the Board of Regents meeting, I am now fully convinced that they do not have the students’ best interest in mind.

The entire meeting was recorded by Adam de la Cruz, who unfortunately was unable to put it on YouTube yet due to technical difficulties. When he does, I will post the major highlights from the meeting I am going to talk about. There are two major moments from the meeting that I remember vividly:

1.) Regent Bill Gates Sr. falling asleep during the meeting. May someone ask me why is he on the board of regents if he can’t stay awake during such major events? I know Gates has done a lot for the school, and deserves recognition, but shouldn’t such an important position be held by someone who is capable of running it?

2.) The chair of the Board of Regents, Craig W. Cole, when asked if the Board has yet thought about cutting upper administration salaries to help lower costs, Cole refused to respond saying they are just there to “listen.”

First, may I ask why the Board needs to create a Town Hall just to hear people vent? Are you telling me the Board of Regents are so out of touch with the student body, they are not aware that many students are incredibly angry over it? Are you telling me they never got reports from the ASUW Senate condemning the decision to eliminate the swimming teams? Are you telling me they never got Anttimo Bennett’s letter full of first person stories on how the budget cuts will effect students?

In times of crisis leaders are suppose to speak to their people and try to explain what is happening. The Board of Regents has not only failed in this; but has refused to do so. They still have not made any public remarks on the issues students brought up; there has been no news of possible changes in budget cuts; and departments and programs are still not hearing news of being cut severely until the last moment. Last week, the Disability Studies learned that they were having their program completely cut. What the heck happened to communication at this school?

This is disgusting; the Board of Regents have not only completely bowed down to budget cuts but have shown absolute refusal to take responsibility or even TRY to communicate with students. Is this the people making decisions for our school? A board who has members that fall asleep during meetings or refuse to answer questions directed by the people they are suppose to serve? Who are they representing the interest of? The state government that has screwed over the students of the state that appointed them?

And where is Mark Emmert? People are panicking; calling for cutting his salary; and even for his head. He is the President of this University, where is the leadership that the President should show? Why is our President taking a vacation out of the country during this time?

The University of Washington, if it wants to keep its reputation as one of the best schools in the country, needs to have real leadership that actually represents its students when needed. Not a bunch of political appointees who do not even go to campus. As a graduating senior, I am ashamed.

Shifting shifts: Minimal gain; Massive loss.

Recently the UW Custodial Services announced that 85 custodians would be moving to daytime shifts. This has been met with much protest and resentment. The reasons for the anger are varied however it seems that the timing is the primary concern. Many custodial workers take care of children at home during the day and work [...]

Selfishness and Tent City…

Within this week, a growing number of students have shown opposition to of having the University of Washing host Tent City III on campus. Unfortunately an issue that should spur progressive debate on how the UW community should deal with Seattle’s growing homeless crisis has turned into a soapbox for the ignorant masses to [...]

Let’s Remember to Remember

It is that time of year again when barbecues fire up, the sun comes out and we unofficially welcome Summer into our lives. It’s Memorial Day weekend and our chance to celebrate all the great times we are about to have. What better way to kick that off than with a cool three day weekend. [...]

Hope for the Republicans in upcoming years…

Many political articles on current American party politics have focused much of their time on the decline of the Republican Party. I will not go into all the wonderful details here; the woes of the GOP are pretty well known at this point. However, there is one thing that could possibly prevent the [...]
